Erik Sowinski, a former WIAA champion from Waukesha West, chased down Duane Solomon and set a new American record in the 600 meters in the Millrose Games on Saturday.
A late addition to the race in the fabled Armory, Sowinski followed Solomon from the gun and overtook the previous record-holder in the finishing stretch. His time of 1:15.6 broke the record that Solomon set in January, and ranks as the fifth fastest indoor 600 meters in history.
Sowinski, 21, ran for the Iowa Hawkeyes after his career at Waukesha West and won the Big Ten Indoor Championship at 800 meters in 2012. He finished second in the NCAA outdoor championship.
He plans to work toward the U.S. Track and Field team for the World Championships later this year.
