It took me less than a lap around the cyclocross course in Madison’s Hiestand Park to understand the meaning behind all those sinister chuckles from riders who had tested the route before me.
My quads and lungs burned as I climbed the hill and descended, climbed the hill and descended and climbed the hill and descended, yet again. I gave up valuable ground on the flat stretches, recovering rather than chasing, and preparing for another series of uphill challenges.
The race gave riders a last chance to prepare and gain points in the Wisconsin Cycling Association Cyclocross Series, ahead of the Wisconsin State and Midwest Regional Championships next weekend in Badger Prairie Park in Verona. Click here for details on the two-day event.
