The Drop Bag is stocked with Active Pursuit reading to enjoy at the finish line of your day, or a coffee break serving as the equivalent of an endurance event aid station. Look for it as a mid-week feature on The Active Pursuit.
Tributes to Johanna Olson: Runners across the country mourned Johanna Olson, who died last week after a long battle with cancer. The Div. III cross-country champion, a Minnesota native who ran at Luther College, showed the determined spirit we all would like to emulate. Even in the late stages of her cancer fight, she finished the 2012 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. This feature in the Minneapolis Star Tribune captured her emotion: “Running was the thing that kept me going; when I could run, I could still feel hope and joy for the future. So I said to my mom, ‘If I do the Twin Cities Marathon, will you do it with me?’”
Swim then nap: This piece from Triathlete Competitor answers the question: why does a swim workout make me sleepy? “In the pool, our bodies lose heat much more quickly than in air of the same temperature due to the increased heat conduction property of water. Even when swimming hard, after a length of time in a cold pool, your core temperature will be slightly lowered. In addition, your body is expending more energy to maintain that temperature, which leads to greater fatigue than normal.”
Bike funding: Credit Dave Schlabowske, the communications director for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, for an in-depth review and preview of how the coming legislative battles will impact the amount of money devoted to infrastructure for bicycle and pedestrian projects. Few people show a better understanding of the government machinations than Schlabowske.
Wishes for DreamBikes: Hanson Dodge Creative asked locals to share their “wish for Milwaukee,” in the video below. The answers included a better biking environment, jobs and health for family and friends. As part of the unique project, Hanson Dodge will make a donation to DreamBikes, the local shop that employs teens to refurbish and resell used bikes.
